I am often asked about the specifications and specifics of the these two phones. I suppose since both have "CECT" and "88" in the name, people tend to get them mixed up or confused. In actuality, there are some key differences, which I will discuss in this article.
Similarities Between The A88 And M88: First off, I'll discuss some of the ways in which the phones offer some of the same features. Both are brisk selling, popular iPhone clones that have dual sim slots. This allows you to have two phone numbers. You can also have two networks if you like if this is helpful to you. So, you could, say have web surfing going on Cingular while you are accepting calls on Fido. This seems to appeal to people who use the phone a lot and are afraid of missing calls.
But, if you have no use for this feature, you don't have to use it. Just put in one sim card and you're on your way.
Both the A88 and the M88 has most every feature you could possibly need in a basic clone. You can watch MP4s. You can listen to MP3s or FM radio. You can surf the web, take photos, read e books, and take video, etc.. Both have Bluetooth.
Key Differences Between A88 And M88:
Tri Band Or Quad Band: The M88 is a quad band, allowing for use all over the world with nearly all GSM carriers and networks. The A88 is tri band, but it will still work for most major carriers. The key difference is the 850 MHZ band. If you don't need this one and don't travel extensively, you can probably get by just fine with a tri band. If you are not sure, check with your carrier.
Java Vs Shaking To Change The Phone (Productivity Vs Media): Here is what in my opinion is the key difference between the two phones and why I think each phone will appeal to a different kind of consumer.
The A88 has the very popular "shake control" or "shake to the music" feature. This allows you to change music, media, etc. by flicking your hand. You can do the same with video and you can take the screen from portrait to landscape by tilting the phone. If you are going to be using the phone quite a bit for music and video, you will likely like this feature as it makes these applications quick and easy.
The M88 does not have shake and tilt. But, what it does have is serious productivity output through Java support (and other things which I'll discuss later), which means that you can download additional applications, games and software. Most people use this feature to take advantage of Microsoft downloads like Outlook, Word, etc. The A88 does not support Java.
Size: The A model is a bit smaller phone weighing 135 grams and measuring 112 x 15 x 57 mm. The M model weighs 150 grams and measures 11 X 61 X 14mm. This makes it thicker and heavier, but you need this size when inputting text and browsing around, which leads me to,
WiFi, GPS, And Windows: The M model is defined by the fact that it has WiFi, GPS, and Windows Mobile 6.0. Obviously, that opens up a lot of applications. The A model doesn't have this and this is why I said earlier in the article these phones are likely going to appeal to different consumers.
Price: The A88 is a lot cheaper. Sometimes, you can get it for under 0. The M88 is inexpensive considering what you are getting, but it typically runs in the 0 range.
As you can see, these phones are quite a bit different from one another. If you are looking for a basic iPhone clone that makes media usage a breeze, the A88 will get this job done on the cheap. It is a great phone. But, if you need all of the bells and whistles, the M88 has that (just not with shake and tilt.)
